Designer Floris Hovers builds colorful compositions that resemble cities and buildings that he can adjust as he wishes. Coming from the countryside he prefers solitude and emptiness in his city scapes. This gives him a sense of overview and tranquility that he doesn’t experience when wandering through real cities.
With this series Floris Hovers explored a smaller dimension than his previous models. ‘Building’ occurs by itself, an intuitive process with a surprising outcome. This causes the natural character, almost humane. It is not forced, intellectual, nor rational. On the cardboard base you’ll find buildings made of wood scraps and found objects.
In 2004 Floris Hovers earned his degree at the Design Academy and since then he has independently designed a wide variety of work: toys, furniture, other interior designs and singular objects. He produces and markets his designs himself or via a renowned label such as the Italian Magis. He also often works by assignment. The ‘cities’ that he composes from scraps from his studio, have found their way to art galleries and collectors’ homes.
The environment Hovers grew up in a Dutch village called Raamsdonksveer, where he still works. His father’s concrete production plant, is a source of inspiration. Machinery, tractors, old toys and life in the countryside: traces of all these elements can be found in his work. His designs emerge during the process of making. In his spacious workshop he builds, constructs and explores his ideas within the third dimension. Colour plays a prominent role in his work. Not as something that is to be added at the end, but as a driver and source of inspiration.
